and Steve and I will be there to talk about saving the planet one house at a time. Okay so maybe that’s a lofty view but we aren’t afraid to work toward it.
Sunday 4/18 1 PM – 4 PM (Parade starts in Oakhurst Village at 12:30 PM and terminates in the Garden)

Wow, are we on a string of “bonus rooms” lately. They are not really much of a bonus if you can’t bear to be in there. Especially in the summer months we find these rooms so uncomfortable that people use extreme measures (read REALLY inefficient) to cool them or give up using them altogether.
Usually there is a relatively simple fix that involves completing the insulation on an adjacent wall or fixing insulation above or below the room. Other times it’s addressing inadequate HVAC supply or return. Whatever the case, there are ways to fix the problem to better and more efficiently use these rooms.

I’m just reflecting for a moment on a recent job we performed. We air sealed and insulated a client’s floor above the crawlspace with spray foam. It was a cold rainy day when I performed the test out which documented a dramatic reduction in air infiltration. The client happily informed me that she noticed an immediate improvement in the comfort of her home.
To make things even better, rebates from Georgia Power and the Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credit offset over 40% of the cost of the improvement! Not to mention the money she will save each month on her utility bills or the improved indoor air quality she’ll experience now that air from the crawlspace isn’t being drawn into living space.
What a great way to invest in your home…

President Obama will be speaking on some of the program proposals for energy efficiency retrofits to American homes in his address tonight. He will be talking about the importance from the standpoints of energy saving as well as job creation. We are obviously interested as we have devoted our entire business to making homes more efficient, safe and comfortable.

Here’s another great article about incentives for home performance retrofits. Some great things are in the works that will help a lot of people have healthier and more efficient homes.

Here is a great article from CNN/Money about energy audits and retrofits. There are already a number of programs in place to reimburse portions of efficiency upgrades.

Come join us 10:00 am Saturday, November 14th at the Decatur Library (215 Sycamore St.) for our seminar “Creating a Healthy Home.” Learn how to improve the indoor air quality of your home and protect your family from indoor air pollutants, chemicals, pests, radon, and carbon monoxide. Click on the “What’s New” tab on the menu bar above for more details.
We look forward to seeing you there!

This morning I completed a test-out on a home for a very nice married couple. Following the recommendations generated from our Home Performance Assessment, we improved the home by performing air-sealing and duct-sealing, added insulation, and installed a vapor barrier in the crawlspace.
At the test-out, I documented that we reduced the air-infiltration in the home by 37% and reduced the duct leakage by over 45%, exceeding the requirements of the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program.
With the weather getting chillier, the homeowners have told me several times that this is the most comfortable their home has been since as long as they can remember. It also felt good to know that by sealing leaks in the ducts, floor, and ceiling, we eliminated pathways for unhealthy air to enter the living space.
The homeowners were also excited when I told them to be expecting $1100 in improvement rebates from Georgia Power (in addition to the $200 rebate they had already received for the assessment) and that I would supply them with the necessary documentation to claim a federal tax credit for improving the energy efficiency of their home.
I love this job…

In my last installment of this combustion safety series, I described some of the carbon monoxide (CO) hazards that can occur within a home. In this blog, I’d like to focus on how making energy efficiency improvements can actually increase combustion safety risks and the things a good home performance contractor will do to ensure that energy efficiency improvements are performed safely and effectively.

In my last blog about combustion safety, I described a little about what carbon monoxide (CO) is and the potential health hazards that can result from CO exposure. In this installment, I’d like to talk more about the ways CO can be a hazard in a home.
